INSTITUTES OF HEALTH, Burbank CA (In Progress)
Institutes of Health is an innovative healthcare company that delivers proven solutions for chronic pain, brain injuries, PTSD, sleep problems, and perscription drug addictions for the workers’ compensation community. After successful completion of their Anaheim facility, IOH brought on Always Already as the architectural and interior designer for the adaptive reuse design of a historic building in Burbank. Similarly to the Anaheim facility, the mandate was to design a center where, under one roof and in an integrated format, psychological, psychiatric, medical, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nutritional coaching and culinary instruction would all take place. AA created a space plan for the considered flow between patients in day-long programs, those coming for single-provider visits, and the staff interacting across departments, with the communal kitchen and dining room right in the center as the beating heart of the facility. The interior design was guided by the imperative to create an elevated, warm space that understood the unique visual and acoustic needs of different patient groups, including those with Traumatic Brain Injuries, as well as a particular eye to the historic character of the building.
